Word from Bill Hicks, Head Coach
I am an addict. I will never be cured so I choose to live my life daily to be the best me, which means helping others to be their best.
I have spent 40 years striving to find ways to be of service to others. I started with NASA on the shuttle program wanting to help find ways to better mankind. I watched way too much Star Trek growing up! It planted the seed we can all find ways to contribute.
I have done various modems of working out from triathlons, endurance and obstacle course events and eventually serious weight training including competing for the first-time 2020, placing 2nd in Master’s Nationals for my age group in classic physique in 2021.. I am returning to Master's Nationals in 2022 to compete for my Pro Card. I owe this to many people. Fitness was a steady thing in my life that would draw me back from my dark places. It played an important role in controlling my addiction, along with the right people in my life and being balanced mentally, spiritually and work wise.
I spent 25 years in the service industry managing restaurants for one of the nation’s most successful brands. I opened units being drawn to training staff and managers to be better. I felt compelled to do more seeing the food industry was part of the nation’s health problem.
Fourteen years ago, I left my job to become a personal trainer and focus on helping one on one. I continued training but also applied by business skills to manage training programs and gyms, always insisting I have clients. That brought me balance. 12 years ago, I had the fortune of meeting Troy Dejean. We worked out and have been friends and challenged each other since. In time I learned of his alcoholism and was there when it was necessary to cut off his enabler so he would be able to start the recovery process. He has helped me deal with my addiction and now I want to find a way to pay it forward more.
I obtained my Master training certification a few years ago and currently train clients at Armbrust Pro Gym, considered one of the five mecca gyms in the world. I train myself with a pro trainer, Dr. Dorian Haywood, I know I will never be my best unless I work daily for it with people that will hold me accountable. I started competing 2 years ago when I realized my worth.
Troy approached me with the idea of expanding the physical aspect of the balanced lifestyle last year when he was nominated as HIMS Chairman for Frontier. It was a light bulb exploding in my head and heart! Fitness 4 Recovery was born of that to find a way I can help impact others and help return them to a balanced lifestyle faster.
Coaches/trainers I bring into this program will all be seasoned personal trainers with a background in working in rehab facilities, having successfully been in recovery or are certified counselors. We want to provide an extra life force to help the physical side in balance.
This is not a job but a passion.
